May 9 1998: I am trying to trace my family history. My Grandfather, Herbert Scholefield married Mary Elizabeth Hoyle. The children from this marriage were George (my father, born in 1879 in Sowerby Bridge), John, Arthur and Mary. I believe my grandfather was a lay preacher in the Methodist or Wesleyan church. Family roots would seem to be in the Halifax area. Bob Scholefield

Other Scholefields

Here is one from Jersey! MATTHEW SCHOLEFIELD M.D. (1799-1865) Consultant Physician to the States Of Jersey. Qualified Edinburgh 1822; M.B. Cantab. 1833. Home and Surgery at 2 Clarence Terrace, St Helier. The 1851 census shows he was born in Huddersfield, and married to Sarah from Lincoln, who was twenty years older than him. There were two servants, but no children, in his household. If he had descendants, they did not accompany him to Jersey, or had already left by the census. The same year, he sat for a calotype photograph at the studio of William Collie in Belmont Road, St Helier (see right).

Giffard's Guide to the Island of Jersey of 1838 provides the earliest description of him - as a Consultant Physician, Fellow Commoner and late President of the Royal Medical Society - he was already practicing at 2 Clarence Terrace.

His published works include "On Health and Disease in Jersey in Relation to the Influence of Climate" (1850), which was updated in the second edition of "The Gossiping Guide to Jersey" by J.B. Payne in 1862. His Lecture "On Modern Science" was delivered before an audience at the Mechanics' Institute in 1860 and subsequently printed.

Under Construction:
