Christ's Hospital

Votum
Unum concentum tollite
Læto, sodales, sono;
Et vota Christo fundite
Nostræ domus Patrono.
Nostro favete carmini,
Amici, quotquot estis.
Quos cura tangit Hospiti
Cæruleæque vestis.
Ut per priora sæcula,
Sic tempus in futurum,
Det fausta Deus omnia
Et Ipsum adjuturum.
Ne noceat concordiæ
Contentio proterva,
Neu tabes obsit corpori
Neu febrium caterva.
Mores honesti suppetant
Et utilis doctrina
Et litterarum gloria
Et recta disciplina.
Ludi viriles floreant,
Qui præbeant salutem
Fraterna per certamina
Et nutriant virtutem.
Artes colantur gymnicae,
Per gratum quæ laborem
Et robur addunt corpori
Et robori decorem.
Sit in dies felicior
Vigore domus verno,
Et floreat, ut floruit,
Honore sempiterno.

Prayer
Raise one harmonious song
my schoolfellows with joyful sound
and pour forth prayers to Christ
the Patron of the House.
Favour our song,
all you many friends
who feel love for the Hospital
and the blue coat.
As through past centuries
so in time to come
may God grant all good things
and that He himself will help us.
May our fellowship not be spoilt
by forward rivalry
nor our bodies be harmed by consumption
or a host of fevers.
May there be virtuous behaviour
and useful teaching
and the glory of literature
and just discipline.
May manly games prosper
to promote health
through brotherly contests
and foster courage.
May the skills of the playing-field flourish
which through enjoyable exercise
add strength to the body
and beauty to strength.
May our House be more fortunate day by day
with vigour always renewed
and flourish, as it has flourished,
in honour everlasting.

Votum - verse translation
Now let us all with one accord
And with a shout resounding
Raise praise and prayer to Christ, whose name
Has marked us since our founding.
Join with us, friends from far and near
Who watch the unfolding story
Of this our vital Bluecoat school,
The heir of ancient glory.
May the great blessings long enjoyed
Still day by day attend us,
And now and ever may the Lord
Watch over and befriend us.
Discord and faction banished hence,
Let us remain united;
And may our terms by no disease
Nor chills and colds be blighted.
Let honest conduct be the rule,
And let us without turning
Pursue the highest that we know
In living and in learning.
Quickness of eye and hand and foot
In friendly contest striving,
On pitch or track, in court or pool,
Shall keep us fit and thriving.
While our gymnastic exercise -
Labour and recreation -
Develops sturdiness and grace
In balanced combination.
So may the House grow happier yet,
Its age more vigour lending;
Et floreat, ut floruit,
In glory never-ending.

Praise the Lord for our Foundation,
praise him for our holy name,
Christ our host and our salvation,
yesterday, to-day, the same.
In his tender love he sought us
when we needed most his aid,
by the hand of man he brought us
to the home his love had made.
Praise him for religious guiding,
for the royal founder king,
for the ancient House providing
shelter 'neath her kindly wing.
Prosper, Lord, with heavenly blessing,
lives of those who love her peace;
with thy love their hearts possessing,
make their number to increase.
Praise him for th'unbroken story,
linking present with the past,
old world habit, civic glory,
time-worn customs newly cast.
Praise him for our spacious dwelling,
ringed with downs and woodlands fair,
wind and storm and sun forthtelling
all his word in earth and air.
Brothers, best with righteous living
shall our grateful thanks be paid,
lifting up with hearts forgiving
holy prayer in duty made.
Praise we thus the God of heaven,
Christ our saviour and our host,
with the Lord of spirits seven,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
A. W. Upcott (1857-1922)

Grace Before Meat
Give us thankful hearts, O Lord God, for the Table which thou hast spread for us. Bless thy good Creatures to our use, and us to thy service, for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.
Grace After Meat
Blessed Lord, we yield thee hearty praise and thanksgiving for our Founder and Benefactors, by whose Charitable Benevolence thou hast refreshed our bodies at this time. So season and refresh our Souls with thy Heavenly Spirit that we may live to thy Honour and Glory. Protect thy Church, the Queen, and all the Royal Family. And preserve us in peace and truth through Christ our Saviour. Amen.

The Charge
I charge you never to forget the great benefits that you have received in this place, and in time to come according to your means, to do all that you can to enable others to enjoy the same advantage; and remember that you carry with you, wherever you go, the good name of Christ's Hospital.
May God Almighty bless you in your ways and keep you in the knowledge of his love now and forever.

We give thanks, O Lord, for our Royal Founder, and for all other our benefactors by whose kindliness and wisdom the sons and daughters of this House are brought up to health and happiness and all good learning. Grant unto us those same gifts of love and wisdom, and bring us with them to the joy of thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Bless, O Lord, we beseech thee, all colleges and schools and all houses which are dedicated to pious and charitable uses. Especially we pray for thy blessing upon this Religious, Royal and Ancient Foundation of Christ's Hospital; the President, the Treasurer, and all the Governors; the Masters, Mistresses, Matrons and Officers, and all the boys and girls committed to their charge. So prosper their endeavours that all members of this school may follow the example of Him whose name it bears, thy dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord, who has taught us that from those to whom much is given much will be required, grant us that we, whose lot is cast in so goodly an heritage, may steadfastly strive to extend to others what we so richly have enjoyed; and that as we have entered into the labours of other men, others in turn may enter into ours, to the fulfilment of thy will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Christ's Hospital Collect
We praise thee, O God, for thy servants, who at our Foundation, saw thee in the hungry, naked and cold who had lain too long abroad in the streets of London, and provided refreshment and lodging in this Hospital; help us so to be encouraged by their example that we in our time may be such good, faithful and hearty friends of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
