Fitters and plumbers
Every area of the Hospital has a plant room, sometimes taking up a whole
floor. However, there are many smaller plant, pipe and generator rooms
and number over 40 in all.
The boiler house feeds every plant room with piping hot water. It is not
the hot water from the boiler house which runs out of taps or through
radiators but calorifiers are used for this purpose. Hot water from the
boiler enters calorifiers and heats a supply of cold water also entering
the calorifiers. When the cold water is heated in the calorifier, it is
then used externally of the boiler water supply.

There are three main types of calorifier. One type of calorifier is used
for domestic heating, one type is used to provide hot water to taps and
hoses, and constant temperature calorifiers are used by heater batteries
and air-handling units to ensure that patients are not affected by exposure
to cold temperatures. Every room in the Hospital must have an individual
airflow.
