Electricians
Petri dishes, test tubes and used blood containers must be sterilised
before they are discarded. The pathology laboratories cannot take the
chance of allowing infection to spread to the public at large (a general
hospital rule not confined to the pathology laboratories).
In order to sterilise the used laboratory apparatus, all items are put
in autoclaves serviced and maintained by the Hospital's electricians.
Pathology laboratory autoclaves

These particular autoclaves are Astell centrifugal autoclaves but there
are a number of other types used within the Hospital environment. The
electricians may also be required to attend to the sterilising autoclaves
in CSSD or the autoclaves used by the operating theatres to achieve a
final sterilisation of surgical equipment, gowns and theatre sheets immediately
prior to use in an operation.
