The GR22 ~ Chennebrun to Anet

leaves

Oh me ~ oh my ~ a page without pictures. Actually I've got them ~ I hope ~ but they are still in the camera.
I use an Olympus XA that I have had for at least 10 years now ~ my Digital Sony Mavica I decided was too bulky and awkward to take on the walk. Hopefully the pictures will appear sometime over the next year! ~ but I digress ~
~ but not until after giving you some music instead ~

Day 17 Chennebrun was not a place to stay ~ so I headed on for the large town of Verneuil ~ navagating on my 1:200,000 ~ luckily the route was simple ~ though the red and white marks were rare. ~ It was mostly across fields ~ and the start of a valley. There was cloud today and it was cool for the first day for weeks. The surprise of the morning was finding "Centre Parks" ~ of which I am a shareholder ~ but I didn't stay ~ all too sanatised recreation for me.
Verneuil was a delight with maps, plenty of supplies and a pizza for lunch. The sun was coming out gradually so I wandered on for a couple of hours and camped by the river Avre that I was due to follow for the next few days.
I recieved a visit from Mosieur le Mare that evening who I guess didn't like my choice of campsite ~ but I pleaded ignorance ~ told him of my travels ~ and so he left me in peace.

Day 18 I was definitely reaching Paris commuter belt as I wandered down the valley of the Avre. ~ some very rich grand and modern houses ~ and the tumble-down farms had disappeared. There was pleasant walking by the riverside, and generally good markings for the path. In the afternoon as I neared my campsite I saw my first sign for Paris at 90km ~ only 2 or 3 days to go!
The campsite in St-Remy was dry and grotty ~ over-run with British caravans on-route to and from their summer vacations. The local shops were in the last stages of decay as new hypermarkets took over the trade. There was only a mega-budget supermarket filled with overprocessed plastic gloop. ~ Oh miserable john ~

Day 19 and I continued on down the Avre ~ through little commuter villages without shops ~ until I met the valley and river Eure. Then it was up onto the escarpment and the Foret de Dreux. The marked route circled the forest before heading for the centre ~ but I feeling tired headed straight for the hunting pavillion at the centre where I took a long rest.
It was then head for the town of Anet ~ gosh I was tired and feeling war-weary but eventually made it ~ a pretty town with chateau ~ park ~ shops and a camping site well placed in town. I decided to take a day's rest and slumbered the night away, fortified by rabbit stew from the local charcuterie.
