The GR22 ~ Brecey to Domfront

leaves

Tree at Dawn Day 6 After a days rest at Brecey, I planned a route along quiet country roads to rejoin the GR22 at St Pois. Chateau at St Pois Here the IGN 1:25,000 maps are very usefull. I started as soon as there was light ~ to walk in the cool early morning light is my favourite. A couple of hours and I made the town ~ it was a pity I didn't need supplies as it was a pretty town.
The GR22 was easy to pickup, and I wandered by Chateau and woods ~ now on the north escarpment of the river See. Then I had my first major problem with route finding ~ a farmer must have objected to the route and forced the path into the field boundry which was impossible to follow ~ so there was much scrambling through hedges and fences to cover a few hundred metres. Bellefontaine It was a HOT HOT day so I rested for an hour over lunch in a deep wooded valley. Again I deviated from the route for a campsite and supplies at Cherence le Rousse. There were only 3 of us that night, and the local shop was run by an ageing man with failing site. I doubt it will be there in a few years time!.

Old farming methods Day 7 and a delightfull walk away from the See, and through ancient farming country to the market town of Mortain (plenty of supplies ~ maps ~ and camping). There is a big climb through the town before entering the first of the Forests of Normandy. The shade of the trees was welcome as it was again VERY HOT . I had loaded up with supplies for a day as there was nowhere marked on the map before Domfront and before entering a second forest I filled my waterbottles (about 2.5l) and camped for the night in a shady clearing.

The Norman Church at Dromfront Day 8 and another 4 hours of forest before I decided to call it a day ~ miss out Lonlay l'Abbaye ~ and head straight for Dromfront. YES it was HOT.
Dromfront I tried hitching as I plodded along the 6km main road, but no luck. However the town was a delight with many shops, and good camping. There is a delightfull Norman church and ruined castle ~ as well as the worlds largest Camambert factory.
