OLD PORTELET INN

PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION PLEASE VIEW AGAIN LATER

The Old Portelet Inn was originally a farmhouse, built in 1606 by Thomas Le Goupil (le Goupil de Guerdain). The keystone has a shield with the initials TLG MB and the records state that Thomas married Marie Benest in 1602. It is situated in one of the most photographed bays in Jersey and overlooks L'lle au Guerdain better known as Janvrin's Tomb. In 1949 it was converted to an I nn. It had seven unique bars which made it a popular attraction for holiday makers. In 1991 it was acquired by Randalls Vautier Ltd who greatly improved the property and added a play area called "Pirate Pete's". The Management have now added a delicious carvery and offer an excellent cuisine at very reasonable prices. They set out to make all visitors welcome.

L'lle au Guerdain (view from upstairs)

During the 18th centuary, Captain Janvrin whose ancestors were among the biggest ship-owners in Jersey, lived in the bay with his family. On the 25th September 1721 he sailed into the bay from Nantes, on his ill-fated ship the "Ester" there was plague aboard. The captain with all his crew perished. His body was later permitted to be buried on L'll au Guerdain which has become known as Janvrins Tomb.
