Did Your Ancestors Sign the Jersey Oath of Association Roll of 1696?
After the "Glorious Revolution" of 1689 William
and Mary ascended the British throne, but their rule was always under threat
from the Jacobites, supporters of the deposed Catholic King James.
In 1696 an Act of Association was passed through Parliament calling for
"all men of importance" to sign an Oath swearing alleigance to
the Protestant Succession. But in Jersey it would appear that every male
over the age of twenty signed.
The original roll is duplicated for each Parish and then transcribed, not
indexed, as this would have meant doubling the size of the publication.
Each Parish has several pages of text, describing the lives and families
of a number of the signatories and there is an introduction covering Jersey
life from 300 years ago, these pages have been indexed.
You can order these books through Channel Islands FHS Publications. The Société
Jersiaise Bookshop has a credit card facility if you prefer to order
online.
